Sally Frank

Sally Frank is a printmaker who draws inspiration from close observations of the natural world and a deep sense of connection with the earth. Her work channels the vibrant forces of life that flow through the forests, hills, rivers, and lakes that make up 29% of our planet.

She uses a variety of printmaking techniques to create etchings, woodcuts, monotypes and lithographs.

In her intaglios, she balances the beauty of native woods and landscapes with a sense of impending danger posed by a changing climate. Her woodcuts explore nature’s fragile complexities. Using the patterns created by leaves, branches and bark, her prints suggest fractals, revealing the delicate and vulnerable structures of plants and trees.

She began making prints while attending Simon’s Rock College in Great Barrington, MA, and later earned a master’s degree in printmaking from C.W. Post College in New York. Over the last 40 years, her work has been exhibited in galleries across New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Mexico.

Frank’s work has been selected by a variety of notable jurors over the years, including David Max Horowitz, assistant curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NYC, Jennifer Farrell, associate curator of drawings and drints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Eva Respini, MOMA Curator department of photography and David Kiehl, curator of prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Frank has been an artist in residence at the Weir Farm Arts Center in Wilton, Connecticut, and Memorial Sloan Kettering acquired several large-scale woodcuts for their collection.

Frank’s studio is located in Waccabuc, NY. She also works in the studios at Zea Mays Printmaking in Northampton, MA and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT. She is a member of The Boston Printmakers and the Monotype Guild of New England.

Statement

I am an artist/printmaker whose imagery is drawn from the natural world and my strong connection with the earth. I find myself consciously and unconsciously tapping into the invisible forces of life that flow through the forests, hills, rivers and lakes that make up 29% of our planet. I use a variety of printmaking techniques to create etchings, woodcuts, monotypes and lithographs. In my intaglios, I attempt to balance the beauty of native woods and landscapes with a sense of impending danger posed by a changing climate. My woodcuts explore nature’s complexities. Using patterns created by leaves, branches and bark, my prints suggest fractals, illuminating the delicate and vulnerable structures of plants and trees.
