Jane Kelman

Jane Kelman MD grew up in Syosset, Long Island and was drawing before she was speaking. She had many interests, including art, music, sports, languages and science. She graduated Kirkland (now Hamilton) College in 1971 with a BA majoring in Fine Art. After college she turned her attention toward the study of medicine and attended Cornell University Medical College and then completed residency training in Psychiatry at New York Medical College after which she began practicing Psychiatry until her retirement in 2021. She was married in 1980 and has two adult children.

While practicing Psychiatry and after a hiatus of almost 30 years, she returned to art, focusing on her love for the majesty of the human figure, applying her unique and bold interpretation of color, movement and form.  Always working from life she used charcoal, pencil and pastel to achieve her goals. After retirement in late 2021, she returned to the use of oil paint, which was her preferred medium in her early years, and began working on still life and portraiture, studying with Bill Angresano.

My work is representational and I have always worked from life. Inspired by sensuality of light, color, form and movement, I strive to create a bold uncompromising depiction of the essence of what is before me. 

Graduated from Kirkland (now Hamilton) College 1971 with a BA, Majoring in Fine Arts. Then studied Medicine and graduated Cornell University Medical College in 1979. Practiced psychiatry until retirement in 2021. Was featured artist in national juried art exhibit "Focus on the Figure" at Edward Hopper House, Nyack NY, 2005. Figure art was shown in several juried art exhibits for Rockland County Pride Center at Burd House Gallery in Nyack NY and Rockland Center for the Arts in West Nyack, NY. Work was shown at Hamilton College Alumni Exhibit, Clinton NY 2007 and Weill Cornell Medical Center Art show 2008 where her piece received prize of "First Runner Up".
