Linda Eckstein

Linda Eckstein works from direct observation. With a forthright handling of materials and immediacy of process, she creates images that often hover between representation and abstraction. Whether on location or in the studio, her unique form of visual note-taking results in a fresh and contemporary interpretation of even the most traditional subject matter, be it a landscape, still life or the human figure.

Linda holds a BFA from Cornell and has had a long career as a designer and editor of information graphics. She has been awarded various artist residencies and has been selected for numerous juried shows.

Linda lives and works in New York's Hudson Valley. She hosts weekly life drawing sessions at her studio in Garnerville, New York.

Statement

The world is rich with visual data. Painting is how I process what I see. Record, react, sort, edit, distill, and revise. Observational painting, in particular, allows me to explore the intersection of perception and materials, gesture and intent. Working directly from the human figure, I seek to record in these unscripted works, the intimacy and essence—be it light, energy or mood—of an ephemeral moment.
