Nancy A. Scherl

Nancy A. Scherl's interest in staging scenarios began as a young child, arranging her stuffed animals into groups and asking her father to photograph them for her until she received her own Brownie Camera. She continues to create cinematic worlds today which she captures with her camera. She received her B.A from the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she explored documentary and fine art genres of photography. She received her M.F.A. in Photography, Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Based in New York City, Nancy's work has received numerous industry awards and has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Please visit nancyascherlfineart.com for additional information.

Statement

“The images unfold in a cinema verite’ style, so the camera is used to unveil truths in a

documentary approach”–Laura Pressley.

In DINING ALONE In the Company of Solitude, Scherl uses restaurant interiors, focusing on lone diners, as a metaphor for describing the experience of being alone in public. The work spans three decades, culminating during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Scherl felt that despite the heightened sense of isolation and fear, a common ground our vulnerabilities bound us together. She hopes that the photographs in this series will serve as an encouraging reminder that we came to terms with our aloneness while we dined.

Her exploration of the topic raises the question, when does being alone in any environment become the estrangement of anonymity or feeing lonely, and when is being alone solitude, bringing pleasure or fullness of joy? Each diner in Dining Alone invites viewers to indulge in considering different points of view.

During the pandemic, while ‘dining alone’ in an outdoor restaurant space Scherl realized the importance of expanding the original scope of her series, to include the pandemic. The restaurant scene during the pandemic served as a symbol of how beyond the norm our lives during the time of Covid 19 became. Now physically separated by plexiglass dividers, private tents, and plastic bubbles, one’s alone experience piqued into the realm of isolation. Yet despite the surreal and unfamiliar experience, Scherl suggests that we were humbled by our experience of this lethal virus. She felt that despite the heightened sense of isolation and fear, a common ground of our vulnerabilities bound us together. “My hope is that the photographs in this series will serve as an encouraging reminder that we came to terms with our aloneness while we dined.”
